Acne Scar Therapy
Subscision is bringing a scar closer to the surface of the skin tends to make it less noticeable.
Another type of acne scar surgery involves breaking up scar tissue, mainly for treating
depressed acne scar. This is well tolerated and easily performed in the office under local
anesthesia.
Injecting medicine directly into the scar can soften and flatten raised, thick scars. Getting the
best results often requires repeat visits. These injections are usually given once every few
weeks to months in conjunction with laser resurfacing treatments.
Blu-U Photodynamic Therapy ®
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for precancerous sun spots and other uses involves the
application of Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid), a medication which is then activated with blue
light. PDT is the use of light-activated drugs which produce singlet oxygen to treat diseased
tissues. The drug undergoes a chemical reaction when light of a particular wavelength and
intensity is applied, resulting in a therapeutic effect.
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) also has the unique ability to reduce oil glands, effectively treating
stubborn acne and improve the appearance of some acne scars.
Botulinum Toxin Injections
BOTOX® (onabotulinum toxin A) or XEOMIN® (incobotulinum toxin A)
Both are FDA-approved medications that are injected into the facial muscles for temporary
improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines on the mid forehead and
around the eyes in adult patients.
Botulinum toxin is also FDA approved for treating severe underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis), when topical treatments do not work well. The medication is injected into underarms to
temporarily block the chemical signals from nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, which in turn
prevents sweat production.
Injections for Hair Loss
Injections of corticosteroids into bald (or thinning) areas are effective for several different types
of Alopecia (hair loss). These injections are usually given every 4 to 8 weeks depending on the
diagnosis and response to treatment.
Surgical Excision of Skin Cancers
One of the most common surgical procedures in our office is for the removal of skin cancers
such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. With this procedure,
several layers of tissue are removed and then sutures are used to close the wound. The
margins are checked by a pathologist to ensure complete clearance of the cancer.
